Digital Addiction — A Public-Friendly Visualization Exploration by Talha Rafique
For this project, I analyzed data from Allcott, Gentzkow & Song (AER 2022), a published economics study that tracked smartphone usage among 1,933 Americans over 15 weeks. After reading the paper and exploring the raw Stata dataset, I built a self-contained R Markdown notebook with 11 visualizations split across two sections. The first seven are static ggplot2 charts covering app usage breakdowns, self-reported feelings about phone use, usage distributions, predicted vs. actual behavior, treatment group comparisons, and the headline finding that 31% of social media use is driven by self-control problems — each paired with plain-English explanations written for a general audience. The final four are interactive plotly charts: an animated week-by-week usage timeline, an individual-level scatter plot, an age-group app breakdown, and a hoverable treatment effects chart. The notebook reads directly from the real dataset and renders as a complete, standalone HTML report.
