IMDb Movie Analysis
Graph 1: IMDB Rating vs Gross Revenue This scatter plot compares IMDb ratings (x) with gross revenue in USD (y) for a set of movies. There's no strong positive correlation between IMDb rating and gross revenue. Highly rated movies (above 8.5) do not consistently generate the highest revenue. This is interesting because it shows a movie can be very profitable without being critically acclaimed. Graph 2: Runtime vs IMDB Rating This scatter plot compares movie runtimes (x) with their IMDb ratings (y). There's a slight positive trend: longer movies (120–160 minutes) tend to have slightly higher IMDb ratings. This is interesting because it shows longer runtimes may be associated with higher ratings, possibly because they allow for more character development and complex storytelling. Graph 3: Movies Released Over Time This is a bar chart showing the number of movies released each year from early cinema to recent years. There's a clear growth trend from the 1970s to the early 2000s, indicating the expansion of the film industry. Graph 4: Top 10 Directors by Average IMDb Rating This is a horizontal bar chart ranking the top 10 directors based on their average IMDb rating. It's interesting because Christopher Nolan tops the list, which isn’t surprising given his consistently high-rated films like Inception, The Dark Knight, and Interstellar. Graph 5: Top 10 Star Actors by Nominated Star Appearances This is a bar chart ranking actors by the number of nominated star appearances, and how frequently they are nominated as the stars of their movies. It's interesting because you see actors such as Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale who are repeatedly trusted with roles in award-worthy or high-quality films. Graph 6: Metascore vs Revenue Scatter Plot This is a scatter plot examining the relationship between a movie’s Metascore (critical review average) and its revenue. There's no strong correlation. This is interesting because it shows revenue success doesn't exactly correlate box office success. Graph 7: Budget vs Revenue for Top 5 vs Bottom 5 IMDb Rated Movies This plot shows the top 5 IMDb and bottom 5 IMDb rated movies with their budget and revenues. This graph is interesting because it shows the bottom 5 had way higher budgets compared to the top 5 with the exception of the dark knight. This chart visually dismantles the myth that more money = better movies. Graph 8: IMDb Rating by Certificate This plot shows IMDb rating distribution among different certificates. PG-13 movies have the lowest median IMDb rating while R-rated and UA movies show broader distributions. It suggests that less restrictive ratings (R, UA) may allow for more creative freedom, resulting in a broader spread of quality while PG-13, aimed at the widest possible audience, may trend toward safer but less outstanding content.
